Mata Mata Turtle

The mata matas do not hunt; instead, they blend in with the surrounding foliage and wait for a meal to find them. When a fish approaches, the turtle extends its neck and opens its mouth wide, creating a vacuum that allows them to suck its meal into its mouth. The neck of a mata mata is much longer than its vertebrae. This turtle gets its name in the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America.
