Sea Turtle’s Mouth
The interior of a sea turtle’s mouth looks like this. Food is trapped by the papillae (spiny projections) and cannot be ejected. All the way from the turtle’s mouth to its gut are covered in them. All human hair and fingernails contain the same protein used to make these products. Reverse filtration is the primary function of the papillae. It’s unfortunate, but the papillae can cause swallowed plastic to become lodged in the throat. Keep the seas clean for yet another worthy cause.
